Isaac Asimov - Asimov's Chronology of the World

Asimov is nothing if not ambitious but this is a mind-boggler even from him--simply a 700 page chronological history of the universe (mainly the earth) from 15,000,000,000 years ago (the big bang) to 1945 (the end of WWII). It describes events that occurred all around the globe--first evolutionary, then cultural, political, military, social, and technological developments--within specific time frames. For reference or browsing.

On a somewhat related note, check out PBS's Forces of the Wild: A Nature Miniseries.
