The word 'hardness' appears twenty-five times in the Book of Mormon. In all but one of these instances it appears in the phrase 'hardness of their hearts'.
| Mark 16:15-18 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. | II Nephi 31:14
...and can speak with a new
tongue, ... Mormon 9:22-24 For behold, thus said Jesus Christ, the Son of God, unto his disciples who should tarry, yea, and also to all his disciples, in the hearing of the multitude: Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature; And he that believeth and is baptized shall be saved, but he that believeth not shall be damned; And these signs shall follow them that believe--in my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick and they shall recover... III Nephi 11:33,34 And whoso believeth in me, and is baptized, the same shall be saved; and they are they who shall inherit the kingdom of God. And whoso believeth not in me, and is not baptized, shall be damned. Ether 4:18 ...and be baptized in my name; for he that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned; and signs shall follow them that believe in my name. |
Most scholars agree that the last portion of Mark's gospel, beginning with Mark 16:9, is not original to the gospel, but was added later. The two oldest Greek manuscripts both end at Mark 16:8, as do most of the older translations of the New Testament. If this is true, it is difficult to understand how the Book of Mormon could quote a passage which was only added to the New Testament long after the gospel of Mark was written.
